The right of way, ready for new rails |

On all the original segments of our line, steel rails were welded to steel bands, which were screwed to wooden 2x2 lumber, and set on the sub roadbed and roadbed for securing and ballasting. We’ve found that, not only is there little adjustment and little room for error, there’s a whole lot of work involved in building this track system which, really, can’t be rebuilt into another shape without a lot of work. We decided that these points, combined with the difficult task of keeping our track from “hump backing”, due to the lack of adjustment and expansion joints, it was time we tried another method. What we settled upon was the same steel rail, pressed into gauged slots in 2x4 lumber. This is not only more adjustable, there is a lot less work for the same (if not more) precision. The rail length increased from 10 feet to ~20 feet, and the joints were staggered to prevent too much rocking and smooth the ride for our paying public. We’ve got several hundred feet of track re-laid like this now. The photographs above are from a pretty damp, rainy October 2nd, way back in 2004...it’s hard to believe that nearly three years has passed since this date. So much has happened, and the site has improved 10-fold. In the first picture above, 7 members are present. From front to back on the left, we have Brian Garner bent over, Sam Neatby, John Harwood mostly hidden and Archie Jamieson partially hidden and bent over. Front to back on the right, we have Earl Brown, Andrew Reid and Peter Reid. |
