Biography:

“Born 1932 in South Wales, I enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1950. I served in Submarines, including two foreign service commissions based in Halifax, Nova Scotia...1955 and 1961. I met and married a Canadian girl while on my first commission to Halifax, and it was mutually decided that I move to Halifax when discharged from the RN in 1963 as a Chief Petty Officer. It was a bad time for the Canadian economy, and there were few jobs in a field I worked in (Electronics), so I enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Petty Officer and was commissioned in 1965. I retired as a Lt. Commander in 1985. I then worked as an instructor in Public Services until my retirement in 2003.

My activities and interests over the years have included Tennis, Rugby, squash, woodworking and, in the late 80’s, I became a metal worker. I enjoy building pretty well anything, and have built a house, three garages (one of which was brick), five sheds, renovated two houses and assisted in building many of the projects for the TC&WR mentioned elsewhere on the website.

Currently, my main home interest is building a 1.6” scale Live steam model of a three truck geared Climax, a logging locomotive. Pictures of it will be available on my Project page shortly. My home metal workshop has a 12-inch lathe, two mill drills, a surface grinder, two band saws, a 4-ton and 20-ton press, notcher and engraver. I’ve also got MIG, TIG and Acetylene welding equipment. My garage woodworking shop has a 12-inch table saw, 8-inch jointer, 15-inch thickness plainer, chop saw, drill press, belt and disk sander, scroll saw, wood lathe and a 20-inch band saw, which has a story behind it.

The band saw was the reason I got into metal working in the late 80’s...to make the parts I required to build the band saw myself, I took a lathe course at NSIT and I was hooked! My first metal-working project on a lathe was a 24-inch by 5/8” Acme thread and nut.
